Training for Non-Profits

Charities and other not-for-private-profit groups

Charity Governance Support is a training programme to support the good governance of not-for-private-profit groups.

I offer several online training courses for any not-for-private-profit or charitable group interested in governance and operation of charities in England & Wales.
The courses aren’t complex, with very little legal jargon: I’m not legally-qualified (about me) and want to make this training as easy as possible to follow.
Each one of these courses is introductory to its subject area, with suggestions and links to more-authoritative and in-depth sources, plus after-course written guides.

If you would like to find these, or similar, courses for you to attend individually, please look at inVOLve Community Services in Bracknell and Wokingham, at the Volunteer Centre West Berkshire, or Slough CVS in Slough, Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead. There may be similar training elsewhere.

Charity Governance Support does not offer these training courses to individuals, only to organisations, and if you are part of such a not-for-private-profit group, not necessarily in Berkshire, that would like to offer these courses to your own attendees, please contact me.

  • Starting a group for good – what a “group for good” actually is, why you might want to start one, and how to do that: whether you want to start a community group, a charity or a community business. This session is introductory to that idea of a “group for good”, and goes through simple steps to establish one, concluding with brief guidance in how to Register a charity or a trading community business. It asks questions of attendees to prompt them to discuss answers within their group.
Ideally suited to up to 12 attendees, not necessarily from the same organisation, who want to explore the ideas and practices of setting up new groups.
  • Running a group for good – guidelines about how to easily and safely operate your group once it’s established. This looks at everything from planning, how you meet and keep records of that, your finances, your policies, day-to-day running and how you tell others what you’re doing.
Ideally suited for up to 12 attendees from existing community groups, charitable organisations (not necessarily Registered Charities), Charitable Incorporated Organisations, or Community Interest Companies (trading community businesses).
It’s better if attendees, who don’t have to be from the same organisation, have already set up their group, as examples will be discussed about real situations, with links and guidance.
  • Trustees’ responsibilities and roles – this more-detailed course is for charity trustees in England & Wales, and those involved with, or interested in, governance of those Registered Charities.
It’s useful to complement your own charity’s induction for new trustees, and also for longer-standing trustees, as this is always as up-to-date as I can make it.
Written guides are made available after the course.
Suitable for a whole Board of trustees; can also be provided to several charities at the same time, although ideally no more than 15 attendees for any one course.

Each page briefly outlines the curriculum for that course: Starting | Running | Trustees’ Roles

Any of the courses can be provided for your organisation at a reasonable cost.
Individuals may be able to attend one of these courses run by another charity or similar community organisation as shown above, especially if you are in Berkshire. Contact me to find out more.
